Facilities

The Faculty of Arts, Environment & Technology moved premises in August 2009 into the brand new purpose built Broadcasting Place. The design course is now located in this exciting new building. A computer generated fly through of the building can be seen here.

The course now has a 3D Printer for the output of small scale digital models, an exciting addition to our facilities. We also have a laser cutter which extends the range of possibilities in student projects.

The course is supported by a materials workshop and dedicated Learning Officer staff providing facilities for working in wood, metal, plastics and industrial finishing. Learning Officer staff are available to give support and advice on the practical aspects of studio projects. All students are inducted into the use of the workshops through project based teaching and learning in the first term of their first year.

Design Studio

The majority of teaching takes place in the design studios where students of all year groups mix. Within this studios we have a small textile facility and computer resource encouraging students to spend time here developing and sharing ideas. The staff office is next to the studio generating a supportive, friendly and industrious environment. The studio supports wireless internet connections and students often attend with laptops.

As the university offers a wide variety of courses, extensive resources exist to support this diversity. Where design projects require specialist equipment, information, contacts or help, this can normally be arranged. Access to video editing, photography and print making facilities have all been arranged in recent projects.

Students have use of extensive specialist computer facilities well supported by an experienced Learning Officer team who can provide help and assistance on a range of 2D and 3D design software.

The University's Learning Centre, open 24 hours, contains a library on three floors and a floor of dedicated PCs for computer aided designing. The state of the art building provides excellent facilities for guided and independent study and research. Recently updated dedicated computer systems are available for individual and group use. The Library is also equipped with several hundred open access PCs.
