MA Design

While it is possible to study the MA in Design without having done the Leeds Met BA Design course, this master’s course is intended as a continuation of studies from our undergraduate to postgraduate level study. Students graduating from BA Design at Leeds Met with a degree classification of 2:1 or above are automatically eligible to progress onto this master’s programme.

MA Design will develop your ability to engage with the practice and study of design in both commercial and social contexts, equipping you to bring the outcomes of design processes to fruition and to work effectively with creative organizations.

The course is designed with two main exit points: PG Certificate in Design for students who wish to use the first third (one semester, full time) of the course to further develop a pre existing design initiative to the point where it is commercially viable and MA Design for students wishing to study the course in its entirety.

For the full MA you will study eight modules including: Professional Contexts, Design Issues and Contexts, Work Based Learning, Research Methods Theories and Practice, Reflective Practice, an elective and design project modules. Assessment is through a range of coursework activities related to each module.

Because the MA is part of a postgraduate scheme there are times when you work alongside postgraduate students from other disciplines from across the Leeds School of Architecture, Landscape and Design e.g. Landscape Architecture and Urban Design and electives offer the opportunity to draw on expertise from the wider University. In Semester II there are options for distance learning to support students whose work based learning makes it difficult to attend.

Study can be full time (one year) or part time (two years) and, if necessary, attendance can be negotiated to meet your personal needs.

If you wish to apply you need to demonstrate your ability to engage with and succeed on the course. This is gauged through a combination of: prior qualifications, an interview, a portfolio of your creative work, a personal statement explaining the role of the course in your personal and professional development. Overseas applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency evidenced by IELTS minimum 6.5 or equivalent.

Graduate applicants are expected to have a 2:2 honours degree or above in a relevant discipline. However, we also welcome applications from non graduates and can discuss how you might evidence non certificated prior learning before you apply.
